At least 16 people were killed by a shooter disguised as a police officer following a shooting spree in the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia on Sunday. The incident is the worst such attack in last 3 decades in the country. The victims include one Mountie according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

“Our important investigational work is continuing. Out of respect for the families who have yet to be notified, we cannot provide any additional information at this time,” said RCMP National Headquarters spokeswoman Catherine Fortin in a statement to CNN.

“When police arrived at the scene the members located several casualties inside and outside of the home,” RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather told reporters.

Police are still not certain about the number of fatalities and injured in Portapique, Nova Scotia. The officer killed during the rampage was identified as Constable Heidi Stevenson a 23-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a mother of two children. Another officer is recovering from non-life threatening injuries in the hospital, RCMP reported through its Facebook account.

Leather said that police were conducting a search operation to catch the suspect at night guiding the law enforcement to different crime scenes miles apart. The suspect was eventually traced late on Sunday morning at a Truck Stop.

“The manhunt for the suspect ended this morning when the suspect was located and I can confirm that he is deceased,” said Leather. The Suspect Gabriel Wortman, 51 eluded police during the search that lasted overnight Sunday while fires were constantly being heard in many locations of the town.

The search became more complicated because of the fact the suspect was having a police care and was dressed up like a RCMP Mountie.

“Of course that’s an important element in the investigation, the fact that this individual had a uniform and a police car at his disposal certainly speaks to it not being a random act,” Leather said.

But Leather announced that it would be too early in the investigation to establish a link between the motives of the assailant shooter and deceased.

A law enforcement personal confirmed to Cable News that authorities had conducted search operations in half a dozen crime scenes starting from Partapique and stretching through Enfield where the armed and dangerous Wanton was finally apprehended.

Stephen McNeil, the premier of Nova Scotia, describe the rampage as “one of the most senseless acts of violence in our province’s history.”

At a media conference on Covid-19, he told reporters: “I never imagined when I went to bed last night that I would wake up to the horrific news that an active shooter was on the loose in Nova Scotia.”

PM Justin Trudeau tweeted, “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the shooting. We’re keeping all of you in our thoughts.”

Canadian Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair in his statement regarding the shooting spree said it was a “truly heartbreaking day for all of Canada.”

“Tragedies like today are horrific and should never happen. I want to share my deepest condolences with all those suffering right now, particularly the families and friends of the many innocent people that were killed,” said Mr. Blair.

“As families mourn and search for answers, our hearts are broken alongside theirs. We grieve with them.”
